THE so-called Arab Spring is posing a new terror threat to the West, including Australia, by creating a generation of newly radicalised young extremists, Australia’s ambassador for counter-terrorism warned yesterday.
Bill Paterson said the sensitivity of the Muslim world to perceived slights against Islam was also complicating the security outlook in the wake of riots around the globe in protest at a US-made anti-Islamic film.
Mr Paterson said the early hopes that the upheavals in the Middle East in countries such as Libya, Yemen, Egypt, Tunisia and Syria would have the effect of reducing the potency of extremist Islam had proved ill-founded.
